WHY MEDIATION?
Move Forward Without Making Conflict the Focus
Separation can involve difficult decisions about children, finances, property and your future. Mediation gives you a structured environment to work through those decisions together rather than leaving every issue to an adversarial process.
The goal is not to ignore disagreements. It is to address them productively and work toward clear, sustainable arrangements both parties can understand.

FAQs
COMMON QUESTIONS
Questions About Family Mediation?
What issues can we discuss in mediation?
Mediation can address parenting arrangements, child support and expenses, spousal support, property and debt division, and cohabitation or marriage agreements.
Is mediation only for separating couples?
No. Horizon also helps couples discuss and develop cohabitation and marriage agreements before or during a relationship.
How are mediation fees divided?
Unless another arrangement is agreed upon, the Mediator’s fees are shared equally between the parties. HST applies in addition to the hourly rate.
Do I still need my own lawyer?
Each party may obtain independent legal advice. If legal counsel is involved, each party is responsible for paying their own lawyer directly.
Is mediation available in French?
Yes. Karen also provides services in French.
What happens if my former spouse and I are unable to communicate?
The mediator will meet with each party separately to discuss any concerns and needs they have. The mediator can facilitate a negotiation even if the spouses are not in the same room.
How long is a mediation session?
Most mediation sessions are between two to three hours long. Most families resolve their matters in three to five sessions.
